South Korea was established as a separate nation on August 15, 1948, when Korea was divided after World War II and the Korean War (1950-1953). The official name is the "Republic of Korea," while North Korea is the "Democratic People's Republic of Korea." Korea gets its name from the ancient Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392 CE), from which the English word "Korea" is derived. In Korean, the country is called "Hanguk" (한국), meaning "Han country," referring to the Korean people.

Amazing Wildlife

The intelligent Korean magpie is the national bird and is considered a symbol of good fortune in Korean culture.
