Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat is like a giant stone puzzle hidden deep in Cambodia's jungle, built over 900 years ago as the world's largest religious building! This incredible temple complex covers an area bigger than New York's Central Park and was built by the Khmer Empire as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Vishnu. Its five towers reach toward the sky like stone mountains, representing the sacred Mount Meru from Hindu mythology.

The temple took over 30 years to build and required more than 300,000 workers who moved over 5 million tons of sandstone blocks without using any machines! Every wall is covered with amazing stone carvings that tell stories of ancient gods, battles, and dancing celestial beings called apsaras. The builders created a massive moat around the entire complex that's wider than a football field and filled with water to represent the ocean surrounding Mount Meru.

For centuries, the jungle slowly took over Angkor Wat, with giant tree roots growing through the stone walls and vines covering the carvings. French explorers rediscovered it in the 1860s and began the careful work of clearing away the jungle while preserving the temple's incredible beauty. Today, it's Cambodia's national symbol and appears on their flag!
