Olá! Welcome to Portuguese, the melodic language of explorers spoken by over 260 million people across four continents! Portuguese is the official language of Brazil (the largest country in South America), Portugal, and several African countries including Angola and Mozambique, making it one of the most widespread languages in the world.

What makes Portuguese special is how musical and flowing it sounds - people often say it's like Spanish but with a beautiful singing quality! Portuguese has lots of nasal sounds that don't exist in English, and Brazilian Portuguese sounds quite different from European Portuguese, just like American and British English have their own flavors.

Portuguese explorers traveled the world 500 years ago, which is why the language spread to so many different continents. Portuguese has given English words like "flamingo," "cobra," "zebra," "molasses," and "marmalade." Many Brazilian words like "samba" and "capoeira" are now known worldwide too!

Some lovely Portuguese words: Olá (Hello), Obrigado/Obrigada (Thank you - said by boys/girls), Amigo/Amiga (Friend), Amor (Love), and Feliz (Happy). Brazilians love saying "Que legal!" (How cool!) when something exciting happens!
