Bem-vindos ao Brasil! Welcome to the giant of South America, a country so big it takes up almost half the entire continent! Brazil is like nature's greatest masterpiece, home to the Amazon rainforest (the "lungs of the Earth"), the world's most spectacular Carnival celebration, and more plant and animal species than almost anywhere else on our planet. This incredible country has given the world soccer legends, samba music, and the açaí superfruit, all while protecting the most important rainforest on Earth.

Brazil declared independence from Portugal on September 7, 1822, making it different from most South American countries that gained independence from Spain. The name "Brazil" comes from "pau-brasil," a tree that produces a red dye that was highly valued by early Portuguese colonizers. The indigenous Tupi people called this tree "ibirapitanga," meaning "red wood," but the Portuguese name stuck and eventually became the name for the entire country.

Amazing Wildlife

Brazil is home to more species of plants and animals than almost any other country! The Amazon is home to jaguars (the largest cats in the Americas), pink river dolphins, colorful macaws, three-toed sloths, and poison dart frogs. The sabiá-laranjeira is the national bird and inspired many Brazilian songs with its beautiful melody. Brazil has over 1,800 bird species, 600 mammal species, and scientists discover new species in the Amazon every year!

Natural Resources

Brazil has enormous natural wealth! The country has vast iron ore deposits that make it one of the world's largest producers, plus oil reserves off its coast. The Amazon rainforest provides rubber, Brazil nuts, açaí berries, and countless medicinal plants. Brazil is also the world's largest producer of coffee, soybeans, and sugar, plus it has abundant freshwater resources from the Amazon River system.
