Benvenuti in Italia! Welcome to the boot-shaped country that gave the world pizza, pasta, and some of the most beautiful art and architecture ever created! Italy was unified as a single nation on March 17, 1861, when many small kingdoms and city-states joined together to form the Kingdom of Italy. The name "Italy" comes from "Italia," which possibly derives from the ancient Oscan word "Víteliú," meaning "land of calves," referring to the cattle that grazed in southern Italy. For centuries, Italy was divided into many different kingdoms, republics, and papal states, each developing their own unique culture, cuisine, and dialects that still make each region special today.

Amazing Wildlife

The Italian wolf is the country's unofficial national animal and is making a comeback in the Apennine Mountains after nearly becoming extinct. Italy's diverse habitats support Alpine ibex with curved horns in the northern mountains, brown bears in the forests, dolphins playing in the Mediterranean waters, and unique animals like the Sardinian wild horse. The country also has beautiful butterflies, including the Apollo butterfly found in the Alps.

Italy's greatest treasures are its cultural heritage and agricultural products that have delighted the world for centuries!
