Petra is like a magical city where ancient people carved entire buildings right into giant pink and red rock cliffs! This incredible place in Jordan was built over 2,000 years ago by the Nabataean people, who were amazing at carving solid rock into beautiful temples, tombs, and houses. The rock changes colors throughout the day - from soft pink in the morning to deep red at sunset, earning it the nickname "Rose City."

To reach Petra, you walk through a narrow, winding canyon called the Siq that's like a natural hallway between towering rock walls. After walking for about a mile, you suddenly see the most famous building - the Treasury - carved into a cliff face like a giant sculpture! The Nabataeans were master builders who created an entire city with over 800 carved buildings, including theaters, churches, and elaborate tombs.

The Nabataeans chose this location because it was perfectly hidden and protected by mountains, making it a safe place for their trading business. They controlled important trade routes and became very wealthy, which allowed them to create such magnificent carved architecture. Today, archaeologists are still discovering new carved buildings and learning about this lost civilization.
