How Do Crystals Form?

CRYSTAL FORMATION METHODS

EVAPORATION: Water evaporates, leaving dissolved minerals to crystallize

COOLING: Hot solutions cool down and can't hold as much dissolved material

Types of Crystals You Know

Table salt forms cubic crystals with six square faces. Sugar crystals are longer and more rectangular. Ice forms hexagonal crystals (that's why snowflakes have six sides!). Quartz crystals are pointed and can be clear or colored.

Growing Your Own Crystals

You can become a crystal farmer! Dissolve salt or sugar in hot water until no more will dissolve (called a saturated solution). Hang a string in the solution and wait. As water evaporates, crystals will slowly grow on the string like tiny mineral gardens!
