An element is a pure substance made of only one type of atom. You can't break an element down into simpler substances using chemistry. Think of elements as the alphabet of matter - just like 26 letters can make thousands of words, about 118 elements can make millions of different substances!
Common Elements You Know
Oxygen is in the air you breathe and the water you drink. Carbon is in all living things, including you! Iron makes up nails, cars, and even your blood. Gold is used in jewelry and electronics. Hydrogen is the most common element in the universe!
