Pulleys
Explore how fixed and movable pulleys work together to make lifting heavy things much easier
Construction crane using multiple pulleys to lift heavy building materials
Imagine trying to lift a heavy bucket straight up to a second-story window using just your arms. Now imagine using a rope and wheel system that makes it feel like the bucket weighs half as much! That's the magic of pulleys - simple machines that make lifting heavy objects much easier.
What Is a Pulley?
A pulley is a wheel with a groove around its edge where a rope or cable fits. By running a rope over the wheel, you can change the direction of your pulling force and sometimes even reduce the amount of force needed to lift something heavy.
Fixed Pulleys: Changing Direction
A fixed pulley is attached to something solid like a ceiling or tree branch. It doesn't reduce the force you need to lift something, but it lets you pull down instead of pushing up. Pulling down is often easier because you can use your body weight to help!

Movable Pulleys: Reducing Force
A movable pulley moves with the load you're lifting. This type of pulley actually reduces the force needed to lift something! With a movable pulley, you only need half the force, but you have to pull the rope twice as far.

Compound Pulleys: The Best of Both
When you combine fixed and movable pulleys, you get a compound pulley system. These systems can reduce the lifting force even more while still letting you pull in a convenient direction. The more pulleys you add, the easier the lifting becomes!
Construction cranes use complex pulley systems with many wheels to lift incredibly heavy steel beams and concrete blocks. Without pulleys, building skyscrapers would be impossible!

Pulleys are everywhere once you start looking - from the massive cranes that build our cities to the simple systems that raise flags and window blinds!
