Every sound you hear - from your favorite song to a dog barking - starts with something vibrating back and forth really fast. These vibrations create invisible waves that travel through the air to your ears, like ripples spreading across a pond when you drop a stone!

How Sound is Made

Sound begins when something vibrates - moves back and forth quickly. When you speak, your vocal cords vibrate. When you clap, your hands make the air vibrate. These vibrations push air molecules, which push more air molecules, creating a chain reaction that travels to your ears.

Pitch: High and Low Sounds

Pitch is how high or low a sound is. Fast vibrations make high-pitched sounds like a whistle or a baby bird. Slow vibrations make low-pitched sounds like a bass drum or a big dog's bark.

PITCH IN EVERYDAY LIFE

HIGH PITCH: Mouse squeaks, flute, doorbell, whistle

LOW PITCH: Elephant trumpeting, tuba, thunder, motorcycle

CHANGING PITCH: Siren going up and down, guitar strings

ANIMAL SOUNDS: Small animals usually have higher voices than big ones

Volume: Loud and Soft Sounds

Volume is how loud or soft a sound is. This depends on how much energy is in the vibrations. Bigger vibrations make louder sounds, while smaller vibrations make quieter sounds. A gentle whisper has small vibrations, but a roaring lion has huge vibrations!

Making Music with Sound

Musical instruments are amazing sound-making machines! Guitars have strings that vibrate, drums have surfaces that vibrate when you hit them, and wind instruments like flutes make the air inside them vibrate when you blow into them.
