Forces and Motion
Learn about push and pull forces, friction, and how objects move in our everyday world
Children playing on a playground demonstrating push and pull forces
Have you ever wondered why a ball rolls when you push it? Or why you slide down a slide but not up? Everything around us is constantly moving because of invisible forces! Let's explore the amazing world of forces and motion.
What Are Forces?
A force is simply a push or a pull. Every time you open a door, kick a ball, or pick up your backpack, you're using force! Forces are everywhere, and they make things start moving, stop moving, or change direction.
Push and Pull Forces
Think about playing on a swing. When someone pushes you, that's a push force making you move forward. When you pull on the swing's chains, that's a pull force. Both pushes and pulls can make objects move, but they work in opposite directions.
Push forces move things away from you, like pushing a shopping cart or hitting a baseball. Pull forces bring things toward you, like pulling open a heavy door or tugging on a rope.

Friction: The Force That Slows Things Down
Have you noticed that when you roll a ball across grass, it stops much faster than on a smooth floor? That's because of friction - a special force that happens when two surfaces rub against each other.
Friction can be helpful or challenging. It helps your shoes grip the ground when you walk, but it also makes it harder to push a heavy box across the floor.
Forces and motion are the invisible helpers that make our world work - from the simple act of walking to the complex movements of cars and airplanes!
