Gravity and Weight
Discover why things fall, how gravity works on Earth and in space, and the difference between weight and mass
Coins falling to see gravity in action
What goes up must come down! That's gravity at work - the invisible force that keeps your feet on the ground and makes things fall when you drop them. Gravity is one of the most important forces in our universe!
What Is Gravity?
Gravity is a special force that pulls objects toward each other. Earth has very strong gravity that pulls everything toward its center. That's why when you jump, you always come back down instead of floating away into the sky!
Weight vs. Mass: What's the Difference?
Here's something amazing: your mass stays the same everywhere in the universe, but your weight can change! Mass is how much stuff your body is made of, while weight is how hard gravity pulls on that mass.
On the moon, you'd be much lighter and could jump super high because the moon's gravity is weaker than Earth's. But you'd still be made of the same amount of stuff - your mass doesn't change!
Gravity in Everyday Life
Gravity affects everything you do. It helps rain fall from clouds to water plants, makes rivers flow downhill to the ocean, and keeps your food on your plate instead of floating around the room!
Without gravity, life on Earth would be impossible - everything would just float away into space!
