Honduras declared its independence from Spain on September 15, 1821, as part of the Central American independence movement. The name "Honduras" comes from the Spanish word meaning "depths," referring to the deep waters off the Caribbean coast that Spanish explorer Christopher Columbus encountered in 1502. The indigenous peoples, including the Maya and Lenca, had their own names for their territories, but the Spanish name stuck as the country developed.

Amazing Wildlife

The magnificent scarlet macaw with its brilliant red, blue, and yellow feathers is the national bird and can be seen flying through the forests of Copán. Honduras has incredible biodiversity with over 700 bird species, including the beautiful quetzal in cloud forests, toucans, and over 200 hummingbird species! The Bay Islands' coral reefs are home to whale sharks (the world's largest fish), dolphins, sea turtles, and thousands of colorful reef fish.

Natural Resources

Honduras has rich agricultural land perfect for growing bananas - the country is one of the world's largest banana exporters! The fertile valleys also produce excellent coffee, and the Caribbean coast provides abundant seafood. The country has silver and gold mines, plus vast pine forests that provide timber. The coral reefs and Bay Islands attract tourists from around the world for diving and snorkeling.
