Welkom in Nederland! Welcome to the amazing country where people have been fighting the sea for over 1,000 years and winning! The Netherlands is like a giant engineering marvel, where clever Dutch people have built dikes, pumps, and windmills to create new land from the sea, where millions of colorful tulips bloom each spring, and where everyone rides bicycles through cities with more canals than Venice! This incredible flat country has shown the world how to live in harmony with water and create one of the happiest, most innovative societies on Earth.

The Netherlands declared independence from Spanish rule in 1581, officially becoming the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands, though it took until 1648 for Spain to recognize this independence. The name "Netherlands" literally means "low lands" because much of the country lies below sea level! In Dutch, it's called "Nederland," and the people are called "Dutch" (from "Deutsch," meaning Germanic peoples). The country is also informally called "Holland," though that's technically just the name of two western provinces.

Amazing Wildlife

The black-tailed godwit is the Netherlands' national bird and makes incredible migrations from the Arctic to Africa twice a year! The country's unique landscape of polders, canals, and coastal areas supports gray seals in the Wadden Sea, millions of migratory birds that stop here during their journeys, water voles living in the many waterways, and hedgehogs that have adapted to urban environments. The Netherlands is also an important breeding ground for many European bird species.

Natural Resources

The Netherlands has significant natural gas deposits in the North Sea, but the country is rapidly transitioning to renewable energy with innovative wind farms both on land and offshore. The fertile polder land is perfect for agriculture, especially tulips, flowers, and dairy farming that produces famous Dutch cheese. The country's greatest resource might be its water management expertise, which it exports to help other countries deal with flooding and sea level rise.
