Norway declared independence from Sweden on June 7, 1905, though it had been an independent kingdom for centuries before being united with Denmark and later Sweden. The name "Norway" comes from the Old Norse "Norðrvegr," meaning "northern way" or "route to the north," referring to the sea route along Norway's coast used by ancient seafarers. The Norwegian Vikings were famous explorers who reached North America 500 years before Columbus!

Amazing Wildlife

The hardy white-throated dipper can swim underwater to catch insects and is perfectly adapted to Norway's cold mountain streams! Norway struck it rich with North Sea oil and natural gas, which has made it one of the world's wealthiest countries! However, Norway is also a leader in renewable energy, generating almost all its electricity from hydroelectric power using its many mountains and rivers. The country has sustainable fishing industries, and its dramatic landscapes attract tourists who come to see fjords, Northern Lights, and experience activities like dog sledding and cross-country skiing.
