Machu Picchu is like a secret stone city floating in the clouds high up in Peru's mountains! This amazing place was built by the Inca people over 500 years ago but was completely forgotten by the outside world until an American explorer named Hiram Bingham rediscovered it in 1911. It sits 8,000 feet above sea level - so high that clouds often drift right through the ancient buildings!

The Incas were incredible builders who cut massive stone blocks so perfectly that they fit together like puzzle pieces without any glue or cement! Some stones weigh as much as school buses, yet the buildings have survived earthquakes for centuries. They carved farming terraces into the steep mountainsides, creating steps that look like giant green staircases reaching up to the sky.
Nobody knows exactly why the Incas abandoned this magical city, making it one of the world's greatest mysteries. Was it a royal palace? A sacred temple? A mountain fortress? Today, visitors must hike the famous Inca Trail or take a train through the jungle to reach this "Lost City of the Incas," where llamas roam freely among the ancient ruins.
