Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji rises from Japan like a perfect snow-capped triangle that seems too beautiful to be real! This sacred mountain is actually a sleeping volcano that last erupted over 300 years ago, but it's so perfectly shaped that it looks like someone designed it with a giant ruler. At 12,389 feet tall, Mount Fuji is Japan's highest mountain and can be seen from Tokyo on clear days, about 60 miles away.

For over 1,000 years, Japanese people have considered Mount Fuji sacred and have made pilgrimages to climb to its summit. The climbing season only lasts from July to early September because the mountain is covered in dangerous snow and ice the rest of the year. Over 300,000 people climb Mount Fuji each year, following ancient trails with mountain huts where climbers can rest and warm up.

Mount Fuji appears in countless Japanese paintings, poems, and stories, making it the most famous symbol of Japan. The mountain's perfect cone shape was formed by thousands of years of volcanic eruptions that built up layers of lava and ash. Cherry trees bloom around its base in spring, creating one of the most beautiful sights in the world when pink flowers contrast with the white snow-covered peak.
