Giant plants are nature's record-breakers! From trees as wide as houses to flowers bigger than bathtubs, these incredible plants show us just how big living things can grow. Some giant plants are so huge that people can walk through them or even drive cars around them!
The Biggest Trees on Earth
General Sherman, a giant sequoia tree in California, is the largest living thing by volume on our planet! This incredible tree weighs as much as 15 blue whales and is over 2,000 years old. Its trunk is so wide that it would take 20 kids holding hands to wrap around it.
Hyperion, a coast redwood, holds the height record at 380 feet tall - taller than the Statue of Liberty! The Chandelier Tree is a redwood with a tunnel carved through it that cars can drive through. Some baobab trees in Africa have trunks so wide that people have built houses, pubs, and even prisons inside them!
Enormous Flowers and Vegetables
Rafflesia flowers in Southeast Asia are the world's largest blooms - some grow 3 feet across and smell like rotting meat to attract flies! Titan arum plants can grow 10 feet tall and also smell terrible, earning the nickname "corpse flower."
Sunflowers can grow over 30 feet tall with flower heads bigger than dinner plates. Giant pumpkins can weigh more than a small car - the world record is over 2,600 pounds! Amazon water lily leaves are so big and strong that a child can sit on them like a natural boat.
Giant plants remind us that given enough time, the right conditions, and sometimes a little help, living things can grow to absolutely incredible sizes that amaze and inspire us!
