Ice storms create some of the most beautiful yet dangerous winter weather conditions! These events happen when freezing rain coats everything with a layer of clear, slippery ice. While ice-covered trees and buildings can look like a magical crystal wonderland, ice storms can also cause massive power outages and make travel extremely hazardous.
How Ice Storms Form
Ice storms require very specific atmospheric conditions to form. Warm air must be sandwiched between two layers of cold air. Snow falls from the clouds and melts as it passes through the warm layer, turning into rain. But then it refreezes when it hits the cold ground and surfaces.

This creates glaze ice - a smooth, clear coating that builds up on everything. Unlike sleet (which freezes before hitting the ground), freezing rain stays liquid until the moment it touches surfaces, allowing it to coat objects evenly and create thick ice accumulations.
Ice Storm Impacts and Dangers
The weight of accumulated ice is incredible! Just one-quarter inch of ice can add 500 pounds of weight to power lines, causing them to snap and fall. Tree branches become so heavy with ice that they break off, often falling on houses, cars, and roads. Entire trees can split in half from the weight.
Walking and driving become extremely dangerous during ice storms. Black ice on roads is nearly invisible but incredibly slippery. Even experienced winter drivers can lose control on icy surfaces. Power outages can last for weeks when ice brings down transmission lines and damages equipment.
