Genetics Basics
Discover how traits are passed from parents to children through genes and DNA inheritance

Have you ever noticed that you have your mom's eyes or your dad's smile? Or wondered why some families all have curly hair while others have straight hair? The answers lie in genetics - the amazing science of how traits are passed from parents to their children!
What Are Genes and DNA?
Genes are like instruction manuals written in a special code called DNA. Every cell in your body contains DNA, which is made up of thousands of genes that determine your traits - everything from your eye color to how tall you'll grow. DNA is shaped like a twisted ladder called a double helix.
How Inheritance Works
You get half of your genes from your mom and half from your dad. This is why you might have your father's nose but your mother's hair color! Each parent contributes one copy of each gene, and these two copies work together to determine what you look like and many aspects of how your body works.
Dominant and Recessive Traits
Some traits are dominant (stronger) and others are recessive (weaker). If you inherit a dominant gene from either parent, you'll show that trait. But to show a recessive trait, you need to inherit the recessive gene from both parents. Brown eyes are dominant over blue eyes, which is why brown eyes are more common!
More Than Just Looks
Genetics affects much more than appearance! Your blood type, how well you can taste certain flavors, your natural athletic abilities, and even some aspects of your personality can be influenced by genes. However, your environment and choices also play huge roles in who you become.
Genetics shows us that we're all connected to our families and ancestors through an invisible thread of DNA that has been passed down for thousands of generations!
