Andromeda Galaxy

The Andromeda Galaxy is our closest large galactic neighbor and the most distant object you can see with just your eyes! Also known as M31, this massive spiral galaxy is located about 2.5 million light-years away from us - which means the light you see from Andromeda actually left that galaxy 2.5 million years ago when early humans were just learning to use tools! On a really dark night, away from city lights, you can spot Andromeda as a fuzzy, oval-shaped patch of light in the constellation Andromeda.

Andromeda is absolutely enormous - it's actually bigger than our Milky Way galaxy and contains over one trillion stars! That's about five times more stars than our galaxy has. If the Andromeda Galaxy were brighter, it would appear six times larger than the full Moon in our sky. Like our Milky Way, Andromeda is a beautiful spiral galaxy with curving arms full of gas, dust, and star-forming regions. It also has its own collection of smaller companion galaxies orbiting around it, just like how our Milky Way has companion galaxies like the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds.

What makes Andromeda really exciting (and a little scary) is that it's heading straight toward us! Scientists have discovered that Andromeda and the Milky Way are approaching each other at about 250,000 miles per hour. In approximately 4.5 billion years, these two massive galaxies will collide and merge together to form one giant galaxy that astronomers have nicknamed "Milkomeda." Don't worry though - the collision will happen so slowly that Earth and our solar system will probably survive just fine, though our night sky will look completely different!
