Modern Greece gained independence from the Ottoman Empire on March 25, 1821, after 400 years of foreign rule, though Greek civilization has existed for over 3,000 years! The name "Greece" comes from the Latin "Graecia," but Greeks call their country "Hellas" and themselves "Hellenes" after their legendary ancestor Hellen. Ancient Greece was made up of many independent city-states like Athens and Sparta, each with its own government, but all sharing Greek language, culture, and gods.

Amazing Wildlife

The wise little owl was sacred to Athena, goddess of wisdom, and appears on ancient Greek coins and modern euro coins! Greece's diverse habitats support endangered Mediterranean monk seals (one of the world's rarest marine mammals), loggerhead sea turtles that nest on sandy beaches, wild goats called kri-kri that live only on Greek islands, and millions of migrating birds that stop here during their journeys between Europe and Africa.

Natural Resources

Greece is famous for its excellent olive oil - the country has been growing olives for over 4,000 years and produces some of the finest olive oil in the world! Greece also has beautiful marble quarries that provided stone for ancient temples and modern buildings, plus a thriving tourism industry as millions of people come to see ancient ruins and relax on beautiful islands. The Mediterranean climate is perfect for grapes, producing excellent Greek wines.
