¡Bienvenidos a Borinquén! Welcome to the "Island of Enchantment," where magical bioluminescent bays glow like blue fairy dust and the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System creates a green paradise! Puerto Rico is like a tropical island that perfectly blends three cultures - indigenous Taíno, Spanish colonial, and modern American - creating something completely unique in the Caribbean. This amazing island territory of the United States has glowing waters, ancient rainforests, colorful colonial cities, and some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Puerto Rico became a US territory on July 25, 1952, when it became a Commonwealth, though it had been under US control since 1898 after the Spanish-American War. The name "Puerto Rico" means "Rich Port" in Spanish, given by Spanish colonizers who found gold in the island's rivers. However, the indigenous Taíno people called their island "Borinquén," meaning "land of the brave lord," and Puerto Ricans still proudly call themselves "Borinqueños" in honor of their Taíno heritage.

Amazing Wildlife

The tiny coquí frog is Puerto Rico's most beloved animal - these little frogs sing "co-KEE, co-KEE" every night and are found nowhere else in the world! El Yunque rainforest is home to the endangered Puerto Rican parrot, one of the rarest birds on Earth. The island also has manatees in coastal waters, sea turtles that nest on beaches, and the bioluminescent dinoflagellates that make the bays glow like magic.

Natural Resources

Puerto Rico's tropical climate is perfect for growing excellent coffee in the mountains, especially the famous Yauco coffee. The island also produces tropical fruits, has limestone for construction, and beautiful beaches that attract millions of tourists. The bioluminescent bays and El Yunque rainforest are natural treasures that provide eco-tourism opportunities while being carefully protected.
