Ecosystem in a Bottle

Create a miniature world in a sealed bottle and discover how water cycles and ecosystems work!

EXPERIMENT PHOTO BY Duskbloom Littles

Build your very own miniature world and witness the amazing water cycle in action! This incredible ecosystem experiment creates a self-sustaining environment in a sealed bottle where plants, water, and air work together just like they do in nature. Once sealed, your tiny world can survive for months or even years without any help from the outside!

Your bottle ecosystem works through the same water cycle that happens on Earth, but in miniature! Plants absorb water through their roots and release it through their leaves in a process called transpiration. This water vapor rises, cools, and condenses on the bottle walls like tiny rain. The "rain" drips back down to water the plants, creating a perfect recycling system that never stops!

Parent Supervision Note: This experiment requires adult assistance with handling glass containers and proper setup.

SAFETY FIRST!
Adult supervision required for all steps
Choose glass container with wide opening for easy access
Handle glass carefully to prevent breaking
Wash all materials thoroughly before assembly
Use only organic potting soil without added chemicals
Don't seal bottle until ecosystem is established (wait 1-2 weeks)
Place in indirect light - direct sun can overheat the sealed system

EXPERIMENT STEPS

What You'll Need:

  • Large clear glass jar with tight-fitting lid (mason jars work great)
  • Small pebbles or gravel for drainage
  • Activated charcoal (from pet store aquarium section)
  • Organic potting soil
  • Small plants (moss, ferns, small tropical plants work best)
  • Spray bottle with water
  • Long tweezers or tongs for planting
  • Measuring cup

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Create drainage layer - Add 1-2 inches of clean pebbles to bottom
  2. Add charcoal layer - Sprinkle thin layer of activated charcoal over pebbles
  3. Add soil layer - Pour 2-3 inches of moist potting soil on top
  4. Plant your ecosystem - Use tweezers to carefully place small plants
  5. Mist lightly - Spray plants and soil with small amount of water
  6. Wait and observe - Leave open for 1-2 weeks to establish
  7. Seal when ready - Close lid tightly when plants show healthy growth
  8. Monitor water cycle - Watch for condensation and "rain" inside bottle

BOTTLE ECOSYSTEM FACTS
WATER CYCLE TIME: Complete cycle takes 24-48 hours in sealed bottle
PLANT SELECTION: Slow-growing plants work best in limited space
SOIL DEPTH: 2-3 inches provides enough nutrients for months
LIGHT NEEDS: Bright indirect light prevents overheating
LIFESPAN: Well-built ecosystems can thrive for several years
SELF-MAINTENANCE: No watering needed once properly sealed

ECOSYSTEM SCIENCE EXPLAINED
Plants absorb water and nutrients through roots from soil
Transpiration releases water vapor from leaf surfaces into air
Water vapor condenses on cool bottle walls forming "clouds"
Condensed water drops fall back to soil like miniature rain
Dead plant material decomposes to provide nutrients for living plants
This creates a closed loop where nothing is wasted - just like Earth's ecosystems

The bottle ecosystem demonstrates closed systems, water cycles, and ecological relationships - showing how Earth's natural systems recycle water, nutrients, and energy to sustain life in interconnected webs!
