Fossils and Dinosaurs
Discover how fossils form and learn about the incredible dinosaurs that once ruled Earth
Impressive dinosaur skeleton display in a natural history museum
Imagine finding the tooth of a creature that lived 100 million years ago! Fossils are nature's time machines that give us amazing glimpses into Earth's prehistoric past. From tiny trilobites to massive dinosaurs, fossils tell the incredible story of life on our ever-changing planet.
What Are Fossils?
Fossils are the preserved remains or traces of ancient plants and animals that lived long ago. Most fossils form when organisms get buried quickly in sediment before they can decay. Over millions of years, the sediment turns to rock, and the organism becomes a permanent part of the stone.
Types of Fossils
Not all fossils are bones! Body fossils preserve actual parts of organisms like bones, teeth, shells, or leaves. Trace fossils preserve evidence of ancient activity like footprints, burrows, or even dinosaur poop (called coprolites)! Some fossils are impressions where the organism left a print in the rock.

Dinosaurs: Ancient Rulers of Earth
Dinosaurs were an incredibly diverse group of reptiles that dominated Earth for over 160 million years! They came in all sizes - from chicken-sized Compsognathus to massive Brachiosaurus that was as tall as a four-story building. Some ate plants, others ate meat, and some could even fly!
What Happened to the Dinosaurs?
About 66 million years ago, most dinosaurs became extinct (died out forever) in what scientists call the mass extinction event. Many scientists believe a giant asteroid hit Earth, causing dramatic climate changes that dinosaurs couldn't survive. However, not all dinosaurs died - birds are actually living dinosaurs!
DINOSAUR GROUPS
- THEROPODS: Meat-eating dinosaurs that walked on two legs (T-rex, Velociraptor)
- SAUROPODS: Long-necked plant-eaters (Brontosaurus, Diplodocus)
- ORNITHOPODS: Duck-billed and other plant-eating dinosaurs
- CERATOPSIANS: Horned dinosaurs like Triceratops
- ANKYLOSAURS: Heavily armored plant-eaters
- PTEROSAURS: Flying reptiles (not technically dinosaurs but lived at same time)

Fossils and dinosaurs remind us that Earth has an incredibly long and fascinating history - the rocks beneath our feet contain countless stories of amazing creatures that lived millions of years before humans existed!
